Pāpā Rupene Mare is a prominent kaumātua of Te Aupōuri, Ngāti Kurī. He shares his childhood memories of his time at the "Native School", where the nurses distributed numerous medicines for the various illnesses of that time. Pāpā Rupene reflects on how one of his aunties were affected by Tuberculosis and resided within a small home where no one else would enter due to the illness. He believes that there needs to be a strong emphasis on one's physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing to ensure the overall health of
our people.
